Serif fonts are great for documents, books and everyday typing. Serif fonts are your most common text. Most people use modern serif fonts such as Georgia, Garamond and Courier New as default web serif fonts. To have a true understanding of typography, you have to know what differentiates the four typefaces. If a font is a serif font, it has lines attached to every letter.
