Notepad++ is a free source code editor and Notepad replacement that supports several languages. Running in the MS Windows environment, its use is governed by GPL License. Notepad++ is my personal favorite as it’s light, fast and has many great features. I use it daily.
ATOM.IO
Atom is a handy small-footprint source code editor based that the creators claim is “fully hackable”. This free code editor is targeted at Windows users only, but Mac users will be pleased to know there is a Mac version too. Atom is constantly updated so it is a great free code editor to get hooked on. Some of its features include:
- Built-in package manager
- Intelligent auto-complete feature.
- File system browser
- Find and replace in all open files
- Ability to split file editing into more than 1 pane.
Coda
Coda is a professional source code editor for Mac users. This program is not only fast in loading time, but also small in size. Some of its features include:
- Touch Bar – allows you to go back and forth between edit and preview mode and in general speeds up your editing speed.
- Lightning fast – Code developers claim this code editor is four to ten times faster than others. You be the judge.
- Local indexing – Coda’s intelligent auto-complete features help you update classes and variables site-wide.

JEdit
