It seems that every year there are a handful of new design and “best practices” elements that enter the fray, and must be implemented in order to stay ahead in such a competitive industry. 2017 is no different, as eCommerce marketing, business practices, and website design now turn their focus towards tapping into the value that lies in generating a more seamless cross-channel retail experience. Furthermore, exploring the substantial potential of social and mobile channels is once more a key theme.
Design for Omni-channel Retail
Since “Omni-channel shoppers spend 50% more than single channel shoppers” (Shopify), Omni-channel design and sales models continue to pick up steam in 2017. Omni-channel, unlike multi-channel, is an integrated shopping experience that is supposed to be as coherent as possible. Most ecommerce ventures are already marketing and selling on multiple channels (multi-channel retail); however, there is nothing that really binds these channels together, so it lacks a consistent experience or messaging across these channels. Omni-channel retail design is meant to assimilate these multiple channels into a unified, cohesive experience with harmonious channel integration. Ecommerce designs will focus on making Omni-channel shopping experiences more seamless and synchronized.
Along with the goal to make purchasing across channels easier and more efficient, a major trend will also be focused on making it more secure. In their Ecommerce trends 2017 report, Pixelter advise all ecommerce ventures to incorporate Omni-channel fraud management into their overall strategy. Of course security in general should be top priority for ecommerce sites, and Pixelter offers a great outline for the particular risks facing ecommerce and the security measures to take. This includes securing the connection between your site and customers via an SSL certificate – we advise that you choose an SSL certificate specifically catering to ecommerce to make sure you have the right protection. In addition, implementing a securing shopping cart system, secure payment compliances and stricter payment verification systems, and layering on security through well maintained firewalls and regular site monitoring is crucial. Security will be an increasing concern and web design trend throughout 2017 and beyond.
Design for Social Commerce
You may already be marketing over social media, which is incredibly important, but are you selling over social channels yet? Although not exactly new, social commerce is poised to be one of the biggest trends for ecommerce in 2017. It is easy, highly engaging, highly targeted, and generates considerable conversion. It boasts the personalized targeting of social media and the ease of purchasing within the social network itself, instead of being redirected to an external site. It doesn’t get any better than that. It also increases a company’s customer reach, their ability to interact with their consumers, as well as gain helpful feedback and plenty of peer recommendations. Right now Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest dominate the social commerce marketplace; however, there are plenty of other profitable social media platforms driving sales that are worth looking into – particularly Instagram, Google+, and LinkedIn.
Design for Mobile Commerce
It’s been said before, but it will be said again and again – mobile commerce is here to stay and will only be increasing in importance going forward. Back in January 2015, Gartner predicted that “by 2017, U.S. customer’s mobile engagement behavior [would] drive mobile commerce revenue to 50 percent of U.S. digital commerce revenue.” What’s more, it is predicted to grow further to become a $250 billion market by 2020. As far as marketing efforts go, Geo-targeted marketing solutions are expected to continue to grow, as well as loyalty app promotions and mobile coupons. As for website design, the key focus will be to design mobile sites in a way that will become even more streamlined and optimized. As a result, we are likely to see a lot more mobile-first designs that are responsive to larger screens, instead of the other way around. We will see mobile design features dominate, like large buttons and images, more integrated video and a stronger effort to communicate visually. That’s not all – with mobile-optimized checkouts, hidden or hamburger menus and mobile touch design, the remainder of 2017 will be more mobile than ever before.
