Blue is a very powerful color. Using a blue background for your website, flyer, or even your desktop pretty much guarantees that you’ll be evoking some sort of emotion.

Blue can evoke sadness, calm, responsibility, loyalty, refreshment, friendliness, strength, and more. It’s amazing what the color blue can stand for if used in just the right way and in the right shades.

Blue, like all colors, is really a spectrum of light. The energy of blue color wavelengths is roughly 440 to 490nm. It is one of the additive primary colors.

If you use an HSV Color Wheel, blue’s complementary color is yellow, a color corresponding an equal mix of green and red light. For color wheels based on traditional color theory (RYB0, blue’s complementary color is orange.

This is based on the Munsell color wheel. In English, we use blue to refer to a number of shades ranging from deep navy blue to cyan. The word blue is derived from the Old French word for the color, bleu.

What blue means in an emotional sense depends quite heavily on its exact shade and hue. In terms of design, the shade of blue you choose will make a gigantic impact on how people view your designs.

Light blues tend to be more relaxing and calming. Bright blues are more energizing and refreshing. Navy and other dark blues work very well for corporate websites or other designs where it’s important to emphasize strength and reliability

Why Use Blue?

Many people name blue as their favorite color. In fact, it is the most commonly named favorite color and is considered the favorite color of more than half the world’s population. It is liked equally by men and women. Men do tend to favor blue just a bit more than women.

Part of blue’s wide appeal may be its calming effect. Some theorize that its popularity might be dues to blues association with authority figures, or perhaps it’s association with intelligence and stability.

Blue manages to convey both importance and confidence while avoiding a serious, sinister, or somber feel. Because of this, blue power suits are very popular with important corporate execs. It also makes it the most common color for police uniforms throughout the world.

Blue’s place as a corporate color, especially its dark shades, might be because the color is often thought to evoke intelligence, stability, unity, and conservatism.

Studies have shown that weightlifters perform better and can handle heavier weights in gyms that use a lot of blue in their decor, while workers have been found to be more productive in blue colored environments.

It is a good color to wear to business interviews since it helps to convey a sense of loyalty to your interviewer.

Some people believe that blue will slow a person’s metabolism and suppress the appetite. because blue does not require as much effort for the eye to focus on, objects and images have a tendency to fade in blue backgrounds.

If blue is overused, it can create a sense of coolness and detachment.

Blue is often used for websites promoting a wide array of products, including technology, medical products, cleanliness, air, sky, water, sea, and cars. Some, but not all, of the connotations of the color blue, include depth, stability, trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith, truth, heaven, tranquillity, calmness, and sincerity.

What is the Benefit of the Color Blue?

For ads, blue offers a lot of bang for your visual buck, so to speak. Because it is seen as a trustworthy, dependable, and committed color, it lends those same traits to your product and company.

Blue is everywhere around us in the natural world, from the blue sky to blue rivers and oceans, so it also gives your projects a naturalistic feel.

Blue is the preferred color for corporate websites. You see it used often on big company websites. Both the communications and web industries make frequent use of medium shades of blue to help them appear high tech and sleek, especially when used along with lighter shades of gray.

Lighter blue backgrounds are used more often by companies that want to be associated with health, wellness, travel, and relaxation. You are more likely to find a dark blue background used by political parties and other organizations, legal firms, and sports teams.

Decide on what kind of emotions you want to convey with your use of blue. The color blue can be restful and calming, but it can also be dynamic and dramatic. While blue generally causes the opposite emotional reaction that red does, it really is about how you use it.

Know that the shade of blue background is only one part of what causes blue to get a certain emotional reaction. The shape, texture, and adjacent colors of your blue background are just as important for conveying emotion as the shade and can change the meaning of the color blue you’re using quite a bit.

Be sure not to overdo your use of your blue background. You don’t want your site to seem cold, aloof, or depressing. While making use of a predominantly blue background can work wonders, make sure to include other colors to give the site life and keep it from conveying the color blue’s less than wonderful emotions.

Make Use of a Blue Background to Cultivate Trust in Your Target Audience

You find blue used by many, many companies and for good reason.  Facebook and Twitter both use blue as their primary color, while many credit cards also use it for their logo and their cards alike.

Why? Because the use of the color blue communicates one of the most valuable things a company needs to have with its customers: trust.

Customers trust you with their money, with their information, and with their needs, no matter what product or service you offer.

Use a blue background to communicate that right away. You can add other emotions to the mix if you like by varying your shade of blue, but trust is going to be one of the key takeaways of the color for your customers.

Ending thoughts on using blue background textures

Blue is the favorite color of many people and it is useful for communicating so many different things. Using a blue background for your website design can be the perfect way to communicate trust, loyalty, calm, energy, and so much more.
