One of the most promising careers right now is that of a web designer. This dream job offers you the greatest opportunity to express your creative side, while working in a bright, clean and techy environment.

If you have the imagination and drive needed to get into this field, and you’ve been told you have great potential as a designer, then you should be jumping at the chance to be a web designer. There are many good web designers out there that are competing with you for the same job openings.

In order to succeed you really need to be more than a “good” web designer, you need to have that something special that makes your designs stand out. You need a tough skin to handle rejections, and perseverance to keep moving forward.

Starting a career is hard for everyone. There is much to learn in every field of study. Web designers will face their fair share of good times and moments of despair. It’s best you be prepared for whatever falls your way. Keep up with what is currently popular. Then, when you have more than a foot in the door, you can look forward to rewarding pay with lots of fun times.

A web designer’s salary depends a lot on each individual person. The level of education and experience in web design, where you live, and whether or not you work for yourself or a company, all play a huge role in determining your final salary.

Education

Design education

Many people are self-taught and have lucrative businesses in web design. However, for businesses, this fast growing and highly competitive job market is seeking out those with experience and a few years of post-secondary education in web design.

The best web designers are computer savvy and artistic, able to take basic drawings and convert them to digital media. Degree programs for web design have courses in digital media, basic computer, and web programming. Every web designer should know basic HTML and CSS.

Many online universities have offered web design programs for quite a while. More traditional colleges are beginning to get on board with this rapidly growing career field, and offer full courses in design and art. Those interested in a web design degree might be interested in taking courses at technical institutes, and art schools. All will offer the serious student many benefits to help further their career.

So how much can a web designer earn?

Yearly salary for a Web Designer actually varies a lot from person to person, and place to place, as I previously mentioned. Education and location are important; and your own experience matters, as your experiences will differ from every other web designer. Your portfolio, as well as your reputation as a web designer are all equally important considerations in regards to how much you can make as a Web Designer.

Those with little schooling or little experience will not make as much as someone who has been going to school for a year, or who has had at least a year’s experience creating web designs. Experience is what garners you bigger jobs for bigger pay. Build a good reputation and the jobs will follow.

Web Designers who are not self-employed have to factor in both experience and location. Some places offer higher salaries because of cost of living. The more experienced you are, the higher your wages will be. Larger corporations are able to pay more to team members than are smaller businesses who often only have a few designers on staff.

Please take the US figures with a grain of salt. The US covers a very large geographic region with a lot of different metro areas and costs of living. Also, I have to mention that these values are averages per country so if you’re living in London or New York, for example, you will be far away from the average of your country.

In the following you will see salaries for web designers, Sr. web designers, Web developers, UX designers, graphic designers and Sr. graphic designers and they are in US dollars. Initially I wanted to display only web designers and web developers, but for a better overview, the related jobs had to be here too.

Ending Thoughts

Don’t let the thought of becoming a web designer scare you. Have faith in yourself and your abilities, be flexible and willing to grow. Do not become disillusioned when you don’t immediately get the praise you think you deserve; there will always be other projects, and plenty of time to build yourself a great reputation. Stay focused and don’t let yourself become discouraged.

Remember that quality should always come before quantity. Your reputation is on the line with every job you take. Don’t under-estimate the amount of time needed to get a job done; if you can’t finish it on time you are only hurting yourself.

Always be professional, for in this dog-eat-dog world we live in, people are always watching you. If your work ethics are lacking in any way then word will quickly spread and you will soon find yourself without a single client. A Web Designer without clients is not a web designer. Aim high, and do your best… the rest will follow.
