One of the more popular, yet modern, form of typefaces is the sans serif style. The term “sans serif” is generally defined as a font style in which there are no strokes at the ends of letters that are used.

Many popular sans serif fonts also typically include a wide variety of both shapes and widths, and it’s thanks to this minute lack in detail that lead some individuals to believe that modern sans serif fonts embody a form of simplicity. A lot of the modern sans serif fonts feature character edges that are more rounded and/or sharp while, at the same time, being both precise and direct in nature.

“Sans serif” is a combined French and Dutch term. The French “sans” translates into “without,” while the term “serif” is derived from the Dutch term “schreef” whiich translates into “line.” Therefore, “sans serif,” loosely translated, means “without lines.” This means that the popular sans serif fonts will generally have a lot less line variations than normal serif fonts.

The following words are often used to describe the different feelings and moods of modern and popular sans serif fonts:

  • Friendly
  • Modern
  • Minimal
  • Direct
  • Clean

There are some individuals who firmly believe that any typefaces included in the sans serif fonts list should be used solely for digital publications, similar to how some people also believe that serif font types should only be used for print. This is a statement that is simply untrue.

In fact, for many years now, many designers have successfully used popular sans serif fonts in printed publications. This is also evident by looking through various magazines and books, both inside them and on covers.

When a sans serif font type is used, it is not meant to display any kind of informality. Rather, when used with aspects such as a form of novelty type face or various forms of imagery, even the most popular sans serif fonts can appear as informal as you want it to be.

Another one of the more popular features of sans serif fonts is the fact that it both contains and takes on various characteristics of many other different kinds of fonts. This means that when a sans serif font is paired with an older and more vintage font type, the sans serif font will be given a feel that is more classic and aged in nature. In turn, when popular sans serif fonts are paired with fonts types that are more ornate, they will be given a feel that is more feminine or formal.

In addition, if your preferred word processor is missing some of the popular sans serif fonts that you like, you will be able to remedy this situation by using a search engine to find some of the most popular sans serif fonts download pages. Pages like this contain virtually hundreds of different styles of popular sans serif fonts that you can download and use for yourself.
