Design your way

Imagine this, you observed a sudden fall in the traffic graph of your website.

Then one day you decided to see your website from the browser end, something on your screen shocked you.

You must be wondering what is this and why the heck this message showed for your website. Allow me to explain.

This is a security warning. And if you’re getting this message for your own website then there are chances that your website is hacked or maybe not.

Yes, maybe not.

Maybe it is just the security warning. And you know why this security warning has popped up? You might not be using SSL certificate for your website. This is one of the major cause.

Ok fine, let’s not just jump into conclusions. Let’s do it in a systematic way. Allow me to explain this matter in detail, step by step.

What is this Warning all about?

Now, Don’t think for a second that Google, Firefox or other consider your website as a malware. There are many uncontrollable forces which drive virus into your website.

So, when the Search engine bot crawls your website, these viruses attack the crawler. This makes the search engine aware of the presence of a virus or any malicious script or page.

So, this is the reason these search engine just warn their user about a possible danger they might put themselves into. This warning is mostly for the non-tech savvy users.

This warning is nothing but just a feature in their “safe browsing feature”. This creates awareness among their users.

After 2016, Google also was said to be marking websites without SSL certificate as unsafe. Just to be clear, this is no punishment by Google. It is just a warning.

There are a number of reasons for such warning against your website.

P.S. Do not panic with these reasons at all. There are plausible solutions for every reason and I will provide you that.

  • The first reason might be because your website is hacked and someone just got into your website which can damage a hell lot of people.
  • Maybe some other websites are hacked which are affecting some of your web pages. Then, there are chances when you might see such warning.
  • There are cases where the website links to some other website which has the malicious script, page or software.
  • Maybe flash advertising area of your website is out of date or contain some malicious software.

Now, do not panic or overwhelm with this reasoning.

These are actually happening to loads of people who owns websites. These all problems are solvable and not so tricky as well. Let’s have a look at what you can do about this problem.

Solving issues around.

In order to solve these issues just follow these simple steps and you’ll be able to find the root of these warning and then take necessary actions to get rid of it and make the website safe and secure for your users.

  • First, find out what exactly is blacklisted by Google.
  • When this warning was issued. This includes the last crawl date of Google crawler on your website.
  • What exactly happened when Google visited your website? This exactly clears the reason why Google has issued this warning for your website.
  • Clean up optimization of your website.
  • Request Google to conduct a Malware review.
  • The deed is done.

What is Blacklisted?

So, here is the most important question which initiates the entire solution process for you. What is blacklisted in my website?

Go through this link and enter your website’s URL to check what is wrong with your website. Your URL is the largest unit here which includes the entire domain along with its all subdomains.

You can also individually check the web pages if you want. Just copy and paste their URLs in the required place and then you can check it in the link provided above.

When was this warning issued?

Now, you need to check when Google last time visited your website (Scan date).

Generally, the last scan date and warning issue dates are same. Yet, there are cases when the dates did not match.

Google is not continuously scanning your website. Still, there are facilities when you can ask them to conduct a malware review. Let this be the topic for later.

As I said before, most of the time the scan date and the warning issue date are same, But, when they are not, Google unofficially tries to solve people’s confusion by a super confusing statement which is,

The review may have found “suspicious” content that was not “suspicious” enough to have added the site to the malware list – but it is “suspicious” enough to prevent it being removed from the list.

What I decode from this is, when Google did not find anything highly suspicious but just closer to being on that list. They will keep your website on hold until they are not sure either you have that malicious item or not (Wow!!! I almost speak like Google….)

In more simpler language, it is just like a waiting list in which either of the things gets cleared.

There are many cases, which initiate these troubles. Such as,

  • You cleaned your website and did not ask for a Google malware check which probably leads Google to think that you haven’t finished the cleanup.
  • You might have removed all the web pages with malicious content and requested a review. In this case, they are now considering that after a successful review you might restore all your malicious content again. SO, do not remove the entire web page, just remove the required malicious content.

What happens to Google Crawler when it crawls your Website?

Next thing you need to do is find out exactly what happened when Google crawler crawls your website?

For this purpose, you need to visit the diagnostic page and then selecting “What happened when Google visited this site?” You may see such warnings,

“Malicious software is hosted on N domain(s), including <malicious domains here>”

“N domain(s) appear to be functioning as intermediaries for distributing malware to visitors of this site, including <intermediary domains here>”

So, now you have knowledge about what is exactly happening. Now, you just need to clean your website up.

Clean your Site up.

Start cleaning your PC first. This is the major source of any vulnerability. So, make sure that your computer is virus-free.

Cleaning up is not just enough, you have to keep a check on all your PC Softwares to be up-to-date. My personal suggestion for storing the password does not use FTP to save your passwords as they keep them unencrypted, this makes it easy for them to steal.

After cleaning your PC, you might want to have a look at this article to efficiently clean your website.

If you’re using any plugin or theme, make sure that they are up to date.

Request Google to conduct a Malware review

This is one of the most important steps if you want to remove your website from the Google’s blacklist. You just need to request from the webmaster’s website and it might take 2-3 hours to scan your website.

When you put the request, first it let Google know that you’re taking care of the problem and Second it keeps you on the priority list of Google for 24 hours.

So, these are the exclusive checklist to follow if your website is marked unsafe by Google. There is no reason to panic, yet you need to take immediate action to avoid any kind of brand conflict.

So, stay calm and act smarter.
