Android VPN apps are the thing that everybody is looking for these days. Everybody as in everybody who uses an Android phone, of course.

Why would you want a VPN app on your phone? For starters, if you want to secure your devices when you are using a public WiFi network.

So, how does it work? Well, it acts as a shield for your devices. Think of it like a layer of protection that keeps your information safe from someone that’s reading the WiFi data.

Another good use for them is that they can get you past certain firewalls and regional restrictions. Remember those notifications telling you that the content you want to see is unavailable in your country?

A good VPN app isn’t that easy to find. I created a shortlist of 27 Android VPN apps that you can test and see which one is best for your needs.

Android VPN apps to check out

Betternet

The first of these Android VPN apps is Betternet. It is a free Android VPN app. Free apps can have issues. Betternet openly sustains itself by app recommendations. It’s a very simple app and works quite well, but you can’t manually change its virtual location.

The free version has low speeds, but there is now a premium version available. This is a much improved version of Betternet, offering premium servers with the ability to choose from eight locations and better support.

CyberGhost

Fast Secure VPN has very self-explanatory interface which is a bit behind the times—of course, that means it is very easy to use. It offers the option to connect to assorted servers based on country, good for finding workarounds for regional restrictions.

The free version has limits, and unlocking all of its features requires payment. The pay structure can be confusing. If you’re looking for a full-feature VPN, you might want to look for another, but it is really useful for getting around regional restrictions.

FinchVPN

If you’re looking for something more elaborate, you can get the pro version with 25GB of data, or the Premiere version with unlimited data and access to paid servers. Free or paid, FinchVPN is a solid option for an Android VPN.

This VPN app has a lot of features. Beyond typical VPN security features, it also has tracking, browsing, and connection protection. You can set it up so that apps can bypass VPN settings and even add in trusted WiFi networks.

Much like anti-virus software, it will offer a report about malicious apps, tracking attempts, and harmful sites. You can choose from over 15 virtual locations, including but not limited to the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, Belgium, and Hong Kong. Freedome has a 14 day free trial. After that point, you’ll have to pay to use it.

Hideman VPN

The Hideman VPN is built around one feature: it secures the transmitted data as much as it can with a 256-bit encryption key. By doing this, it scrambles the original data too much for anyone monitoring the data to understand it without the key.

The app says it has servers identified for each of these activities, though exactly how that affects anything is unclear.

When you sign up, you get 2GB of free data, amounting to a free trial. Anything more needs to be paid. The current subscription fees are $11 a month; $54 for six months; and $72 for two years. These prices are a promotion at the time of this writing.
