Design your way

Graphic design trends are dynamic and constantly in flux.  This is particularly true in a digital era, where modern graphic design ideas constantly emerge only to become outdated quickly.  2019 design trends may, therefore, differ greatly to those in recent years.

Although some graphic design trends have stood the test of time may have fleeting popularity before being quickly replaced.  So if you’re looking to how to add interest to your designs while staying ahead of the competition, here are the graphic trends 2019 will bring about.

So what are the latest hits in graphic design?

2019 graphic design trends are imaginative, experimental and ‘out there’.  Some trends emerge quickly while others have been evolving over time.  Why waste time though?  Let’s explore the 2019 design trends which are sure to take the graphic design world by storm.

Images with a ‘glitch’

glitcheffect-700x375 Graphic design trends 2019: What will be predominant this year

In the past, top designs included a perfect image.  A new trend in great graphic design, however, is to include a glitch in the overall image.  What was once seen as a fault which would leave a spectator uncomfortable is now seen valuable.

This should perhaps be one of the least surprising element of 2019 design.  Horror movies have been using the glitch effect for a long time.  2019 graphics now carry on this glitch tradition.

Creating a ruined effect

ruined-700x917 Graphic design trends 2019: What will be predominant this year

Would you ever have believed that a top graphic designer would ruin his work and then release it as a trend?  This is exactly what is happening to graphic design styles in 2019. Where scratching, splashing, ripping and breaking was once a sign of a perfectionist, it has become an artistic trend.  Look out for the ruined effect in top designs for 2019.

Making use of color channels

colorchannel-700x874 Graphic design trends 2019: What will be predominant this year

2019 graphics make use of color channels.  That’s right, top graphic designers are now making use of color channels to produce holograms, hallucinatory effects and image distortions.  All of these techniques have an impact on viewers and are topping the trends in 2019 design.

Futuristic trends lead

holograms-700x418 Graphic design trends 2019: What will be predominant this year

Although holography was leading graphic design trends, it has recently started to fall behind as futuristic trends begin to take its place.  Although holograms can be mesmerizing we will see more futuristic trends and less holography during 2019.

Going double in 2019 design

Current design trends are going double, and this is set to continue in 2019.  Let’s explore design and trends are going double in 2019.

Double exposure

doube-expo-700x394 Graphic design trends 2019: What will be predominant this year

Design trends for 2019 are using double exposure more and more frequently to amaze viewers.  Until more recent times, double exposure seemed to be a thing of the past.  Now, however, the trend is re-emerging as trends in graphic design use double exposure techniques to achieve top graphic images.

Here are some excellent examples:

Double duotone

doubleeffect-700x349 Graphic design trends 2019: What will be predominant this year

Top designers are using two monochromatic images, overlapped to create a futuristic effect.  Combining double exposure with color channeling creates a dramatic and very effective result.  Seeing double is no longer a sign of over indulgence.  Instead, this great new trend will give you a modern design with maximum impact.

Double the light

doublelight-700x394 Graphic design trends 2019: What will be predominant this year

Another 2019 graphic design trend is doubling the color of light in graphic design.  By using a double source of light, or splitting light between color channels, designers are able to create edgy and impressive designs that wow their viewers.

Classic duotone says goodbye for the 2019 art trends

duotonez-700x438 Graphic design trends 2019: What will be predominant this year

While double duotone is set to take the stage, classic duotone will wave goodbye in 2019.  As design evolves and progresses, old styles begin to disappear.  Current design trends favour a double exposure duotone.  Classic duotone has taken the stage for much of 2018 but it is time for a new and futuristic approach.

Typography rules in the latest design trends (and it always did)

Creative typography has been adding to trends in graphic design for some time now but 2019 typography will allow this creative trend to shine.

When it comes to typography 2019 it’s time to let your imagination run free.  Creative typography can be used alone or in combination with design techniques, images or illustrations.  Take a look at these outstanding examples.

Cropped typography

cropped-700x438 Graphic design trends 2019: What will be predominant this year

Cropped typography has been used in modern graphic art to create a maximum impact.  Beginning in 2017, this great graphic design trend is set to continue as one of the latest graphic design trends.

The key to using cropped typography is to balance erasing elements of your typeface while keeping it readable.  This takes a great deal of creativity and needs a professional eye.  The result, however, will wow your viewers.

Chaotic typography

Chaos emerged as a new design trend in 2017 and will remain in 2019.  The latest design trend is to use chaotic typography.  This means using altered alignment with the unusual ordering of letters.  Say ‘Yes’ to the unconventional in 2019 designs.

Bold Lettering dominates

The latest design trend involves bold lettering.  In 2019 the bigger and bolder your typography the more trendy it will be.  Large typeface will dominate the design scene and a wide range of font styles will emerge.  Think large headlines and bold fonts.

Trends once only used in print will now make their way into digital design.  Think large fonts, creative lettering and bold alignment.  Imagery, creative kerning and exciting layouts dominate the digital design scene for 2019.

In 2019 typography will interact with other elements of design, creating a real life design effect.  Letters are turned into objects in these stunning real life examples.

Negative space design

neg_dog_cat-700x396 Graphic design trends 2019: What will be predominant this yearNegative space is the yin and yang of your graphic design page.  Achieving balance will give you excellent results.  When you achieve a great balance between positive and negative space, your viewer will feel positive.

Using negative space to achieve a great aesthetic has been a top graphic design trend which shows no sign of fading out in 2019.

Typography as negative space

negative-typo-700x357 Graphic design trends 2019: What will be predominant this year

As typography combines with modern graphic art trends, it uses negative space to stand out against the background.  This reversal of background and foreground creates trendy graphics which will make your designs stand out in 2019.

Colored fonts

colorfont-700x875 Graphic design trends 2019: What will be predominant this year

2019 designs make use of colorful fonts which are set to startle as a new design trend.  With software packages such as Photoshop or Illustrator releasing new software which enables colorful font designs, this 2019 graphic design trend is set to sizzle.

Colorful fonts are an essential design tool for 2019 with designers both creating their own fonts as well as using color to make a statement.

Paying attention to colors

Colorful 3D substance

Bright colors combine with 3D design in 2019 to create trendy graphics which stand out against the crowds.  With clients requests to make designs ‘pop’ the combination of color and dimension is set to head up graphic design trends of 2019.

So if you want to make your designs stand out in 2019 combine popular graphic colors with 3D designs to make a truly trendy statement.

One color 3D design

The latest art trends are not only strong but subtle.  Using 3D designs placed against the same colored backgrounds, 3D techniques encourage designs to ‘pop’ out.  Popular graphic colors are used to create these trendy designs.

Stunning metallics

It is not only bright colors which dominate design, but stunning metallic colors.  Combined with design elements such as creative typography or a 3D effect, the latest art trends incorporate the zing of these popular graphic colors.

Color transitions and gradients

gradiant-700x394 Graphic design trends 2019: What will be predominant this year

Instagram first began the gradient trend, incorporating a color gradient into its logo in 2016.  At that time flat design (a single, saturated color) was trending in design and gradients went largely unnoticed.  Times have changed, however, and gradients are beginning to show themselves in top graphic designs around the web.

Once gradients began to emerge, they took on rainbow colors and used striking contrasts.  At one time, a range of colors dominated up in logos, designs, backgrounds, and buttons.

Corporate banners showed gradient colors and no presentation felt complete without one.  Then, in 2007, flat design began to take over.  As a single, solid color, flat design allowed content to dominate.

However, as times change flat designs are beginning to evolve.  Single colors now fade or transition, creating a semi – flat design.

With companies like Instagram and Stripe increasing the popularity of gradient colors, they are beginning to emerge from the shadows and shape modern graphic design trends.  Gradient colors are now seen in illustrations, website backgrounds, UI, logos and branding.

Solid colors and flat designs are dying trends

gradiantbg-700x525 Graphic design trends 2019: What will be predominant this year

As gradients re-emerge as the latest art trends, solid colors and flat designs are beginning to fade into the background.  These trends, which dominated minimal design, are starting to fade away.

We will still see them in areas which demand a clear and uncluttered surface, however, so flat designs and solid colors will maintain their presence in application design and clear, modern website designs.

Illustrations rule

excellent Graphic design trends 2019: What will be predominant this year

New graphic design trends include custom made illustrations.  Illustrations add a unique and creative feel to any design.  Illustration will always add a touch of talent and imagination to a design and as a result, will always stay on trend.

In 2019, illustrations combine with careful use of negative space, popular design colors, 3D designs and ‘double’ imagery in order to create the best graphic art illustrations out there.

Combining illustrations with photographic images

illustration-n-photography-700x777 Graphic design trends 2019: What will be predominant this year

Illustrations rule, but when combined with photographic images they create the latest graphic design trends.  Layering a digital drawing over a photo boosts the photographic image and heightens creativity.  If you have a photograph you would like to update, use this great 2019 graphic art trend to update your look.

Paper cutting as illustration

papercut-700x700 Graphic design trends 2019: What will be predominant this year

Paper cut illustration is one of the great graphic design trends emerging in 2019.  Based on the art of paper cutting, the goal is to create a textured illustration representing compositions made of multiple layers of paper.

The creativity of 2019’s new graphic design trends is both fresh and inspiring.  If we had to sum up 2019’s graphic design trends in three worlds, we would have to say ‘fun and creative’.  Originality dominates with color, depth and texture shaping new trends.  The results are striking, hypnotic and inspiring.

Responsive Logos

responsivelogo-700x438 Graphic design trends 2019: What will be predominant this year

Responsive designs have been a crucial element in top designs for over 10 years.  As mobile devices, tablets and wearable technology begin to dominate, a responsive design is imperative in showing off a site no matter the size of the screen.  With a range of different screens available, designers could no longer depend on a website being viewed on a computer screen.

The result was a great deal of work to ensure a design was ‘responsive’ or able to be viewed on a range of different screen sizes.

Adjusting a logo to meet a range of different screen sizes was once considered impossible.  However, top designs ensure that a logo is adjustable to a range of different screen sizes.  Companies have been redesigning logos to suit the simplicity needed for small screen viewing.

Digital designer Joe Harrison has begun to work on responsive logo designs for some of the world’s most recognizable brands.  This means adjustable logos which respond well to a range of screens.

In addition to adjustable sizes, colors are often flatter in 2019 design.  Color transitions are smooth and sophisticated, fitting in with flat design.

Dabbling with duotones

dominated-by-duotones-700x695 Graphic design trends 2019: What will be predominant this year

Duotones were traditionally used in the printing industry and are familiar in early comic book designs.  With duo tones, two half toned colors are printed on top of one another, creating a duo-toned image.  2019 graphic imagery is dominated by duotones.

Digital media has made it possible not only to create duo toned images but monotones, tri tones, quad tones, and fake duo toned imagery as well.

Spotify is seen to be responsible for bringing duotones back into fashion.  Designers are now experimenting with a range of different images which can be produced while using a limited range of colors.

Duotone images compliment semi-flat designs and are bound to be a great graphic design trend of 2019.

Adding movement: making use of animations or GIFs

uber Graphic design trends 2019: What will be predominant this year

As designers pay a great deal of attention to UX or user experience, micro interactions have become increasingly popular as graphic trends.  Micro interactions assist a user with making a site intuitive and easy to use.  Think of the small head shake animation which helps you to realize that you may have loaded your pin number incorrectly.

Larger animations (or GIFS) have also become increasingly popular as they make a site more interesting, assist users with understanding content and share meaning.  They often assist with engaging users while exploring a site.  Although GIFS were once simple, clip art style images they have now evolved and are often quite sophisticated.

By using GIFS, designers are often able to add interest to site content, emails, newsletters and logo designs.  GIFS add a great deal of appeal as they are clever, quirky and appealing.  Make use of this great graphic design trend for 2019.

Custom illustration and graphic art designs

Custom design is all set to become a hot trend in 2019.  Although custom designs and illustrations have dominated the magazine and print industry, websites have often used stock images or photographs.

In 2019, however, this is set to change.  Designs and trends are changing and custom graphic designs or illustrations are all set to take the digital world by storm.

cover___design_sprints_final_600x800_2x Graphic design trends 2019: What will be predominant this year

Flat, as well as minimal design, has dominated websites over the past years.  This left very little space for illustrations, calligraphy, creative typography, and duotone designs.  However, as designs are changing there is increasing space for new and far more creative custom design concepts.

As trends change, top designers are starting to look for a unique appeal.  Custom designs and illustrations add creativity as well as personality to a brand, assisting with brand identity.

As 2019 design trends change, designers and their clients will start to see a range of new and interesting designs dominate the digital realm.

Authentic photography

photo-1546613591-8cdfe1556200 Graphic design trends 2019: What will be predominant this year

Current design trends focus on emotionally evocative and authentic imagery.  This means photographs which are relevant and have a deep emotional resonance with the viewer.

Past trends focused on stock images.  If you are going to be using stock images make sure they are unique.  Look for images which share a story, share emotion or show people in action.

Natural photography is starting to return as a design trend for 2019.  Authenticity, without models or poses, is what is currently trending for 2019.  If you are using imagery, ensure yours tells a story.

Highly detailed vintage imagery

vintage-700x990 Graphic design trends 2019: What will be predominant this year

The new vintage trend in great graphic design takes us back to a time when the pace was slower.  Vintage imagery cannot be used in all industries.

Often used to inspire nostalgia, vintage or retro imagery conjures up images of artisanal bread or hand-sewn clothes.  The message presents a contrast to our modern times where change happens quickly and the digital realm has an intangible quality.

Space imagery and ultraviolet colors

galshir-explorer_2x Graphic design trends 2019: What will be predominant this year

Design and trends in 2019 are strongly influenced by space themes and ultraviolets.  Ultraviolets are drawn from the deep blue visions from space and our own deep emotions.

Deep blues and violets reflect the wonder of discovery or exploration.  Space-related imagery will dominate interior designs, fashion, web, and graphic design during 2019.

Mid century modern

min-700x525 Graphic design trends 2019: What will be predominant this year

While 80s fashions and 90s grunge have been making a comeback in recent times, mid-century has been making a return too.  Mid-century represents the times between 1933 and 1966.

These styles have been present within the interior and fashion design industry for some time but are now starting to show themselves in the digital realm, including website and graphic design as well.  Look out for these graphic design styles in 2019.

Cinemagraphs

cinemagraph-gifs-taxi-window Graphic design trends 2019: What will be predominant this year

Cinemagraphs are soft, short animations which are currently available through both social media and the web.  A cinemagraph begins and ends with the same image which appears to play in endless motion.  They are one of the hottest new design trends for 2019.

Isometric design

platforms Graphic design trends 2019: What will be predominant this year

Isometric design creates a 3D image using 2D layers.  These designs are a reaction to the fading flat design trend, giving substance to a site without the slow download time.  They are a popular graphic design style for 2019.

Organic designs and asymmetrical edges

happy-children_s-day Graphic design trends 2019: What will be predominant this year

After years of flat designs and symmetrical grids, graphic designers are moving towards organic designs and asymmetrical edges.  In the past, compositions were balanced and designs were symmetrical.

Designers in all fields are starting to move away from rigid structures and uncompromising frameworks.  Look for flowing designs, random patterns and asymmetry as the newest designs of 2019.

Ending thoughts on the graphic design trends that I believe we’ll see in 2019

Graphic designers are changing and evolving.  Designers are beginning a new path of creativity and freedom as flat design and minimalism start to fade away.

The field of graphic design is starting to become a lot more interesting as creativity, individuality and uniqueness emerge as design trends for 2019.  With so many new design options to choose from, 2019 is the year to expand on your creativity.
