Sometimes it looks good to create a pencil sketch of your portrait so that it looks like some artist just sketched your image. In this tutorial you will learn how to create a pencil sketch in Photoshop.
Steps to create pencil sketch in Photoshop
1. First of all, open Adobe Photoshop. We are using Adobe Photoshop CS5.5 but this also works on earlier or later versions.
2. Next, Open the image which you want to sketch. To do that, click on the File >> Open and select the file you want to open. Then click on the Open button.
3. Next, from the menu bar, choose Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Hue / Saturation.. And click on the OK button.
4. Next in the properties panel, drag the saturation slider to the leftmost to a value of -100. This will make your photo black and white.
5. Next, open Layers palette and right click on the background layer (image layer) and select ‘Duplicate Layer’ and click OK. This will duplicate the layer.
6. Next, with the duplicated layer selected in the Layers palette, choose Image > Adjustments > Invert from the menu bar. This will give a film negative appearance.
7. Next, in the Layers palette, change blending mode of the duplicated layer to Color Dodge. Changing to color dodge will turn the image to white.
8. Next, in the Layers palette, right click the duplicated layer and choose ‘Convert to smart object’. This will convert the layer to a smart object so we can use special filter that will affect smart object.
9. Finally, from the menu bar, choose Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and set radius = 12 pixels. This will reveal your sketched image.
