Tumblr seemed to me a really bad site when I first heard of it, especially because at that time they were having problems with downtime, slow service and other annoying issue. Since that moment when I first heard about it, Tumblr evolved a lot and it has now become a reliable blog platform.

Although many people use it more like a micro-blogging platform by sharing pictures rather than a regular one like WordPress, Tumblr also has a lot of themes and designs which make it a WordPress competitor in the eyes of the people who just want to blog and not use it in a more complex way.

What I found interesting during the research for this article is that some themes have been tweaked in such ways that they mimic the WordPress portfolio look, making them a really cheap alternative. I’m saying a cheap alternative because for a tumblr blog you only need a custom domain (if you want to), the hosting being handled by tumblr, so instead of the regular $10-$20 per month for a hosting account as you would normally pay for a blog based on WordPress, on tumblr you would only pay around 10$ per year for a custom domain. You could have no cost at all if you wouldn’t buy a custom domain and you wouldn’t be bothered by the URL username.tumblr.com.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that you should use tumblr instead of WordPress, I’m just saying that it’s an option. Although most tumblr themes are really laggy and disturbing somehow like geocities sites, there are also designs which look good and I gathered a few of them in this article for inspiration.
