Brick textures are all around us. A brick texture is one of the most evocative backgrounds and there is actually a lot of diversity in brick wall textures.

A brick wall background for your website, e-newsletter, flyer, or sign can look rustic, industrial, woodsy, and much more depending on how the brick texture looks.

There’s a kind of beauty to the linearity of brick walls. They’re both ordered and chaotic, making a brick texture an interesting choice of background that can be either fun or professional.

When used just right, an everyday brick wall texture can look absolutely amazing and give your product just the touch it needs to communicate to potential clients.

Brick textures work well in this role for two reasons: their color and their texture. A blue brick background with the same texture is going to have a different feeling than red brick background with same texture. Let’s take a quick look at different kinds of brick textures.

Smooth Brick Textures

This typically describes a brick texture that has a smooth modern finish or a smooth sandfaced finish. They are usually wirecut which gives them a consistent and uniform character.

A sandfaced finish starts with a smooth brick and blasts a coating of sand onto the column of brick clay before it is fired in a kiln. The sand adheres to the brick and adds a slight bit of texture (and visual interest) to the otherwise smooth brick texture.

Light Brick Textures

These bricks are also modern, uniform, and wire-cut. However, textures are applied to them using any number of different kinds of rollers or blades. These brick textures can range from small indentations (dragfaced) to rippled or wave effects (rolled back) to printed irregularities (indented, printed, or textured).

Heavy Brick Textures

Heavy brick textures have harder and rougher textures. They range from the bark-like feel of rusticated brick to Hanson’s facing bricks to the unique wide range of clop clay bricks. Slop clay is a liquid clay solution that gets slopped onto a wire cut brick prior to firing in a kiln, giving the bricks a rough random finish.

Tumbled Brick Textures

Also known as retro brick texture, these bricks have a distressed and irregular look. They have an old world look that is associated with reclaimed bricks. This look is achieved with newer bricks through an aging process that tumbles wire-cut bricks in a drum.

Stock Brick Textures

These are your traditional brick textures. They have a handmade appearance. Their slightly irregular shape and creased texture give them a lot of personality. They look this way because soft clay clots are ‘thrown into a mold called a stock. Excess clay is struck off from the top of the mold, then the bricks are fired, and finally turned out after firing.

Creating a Brick Wall Background in Adobe Photoshop

To create a brick texture in Photoshop, you can either sketch the texture entirely, which is a rather difficult approach that’s used most often for cartoons, or you can take a photo of a real brick wall and then edit it.

Take or find an unedited photo. The best brick wall texture photos should be symmetric. The lighting is also very important. For the most editing freedom, you want to make sure the lighting is homogenous. Using the flash is usually not the best idea since it will cause some uneven reflections.

Upload your photo of a brick wall to Photoshop. What you’re going to do here is fix the color into what you want. You want to focus on the color saturation, color contrast, color temperature, shaders, and sharpness. There are no specific rules for producing a good brick wall texture from a photo, so play around with the setting until you get a result you like.

Ending thoughts on Brick texture

There are plenty of brick textures out there to choose from that have already been made. Of course, if none of them are quite right for your project, you can always choose to make your own, which opens up a lot of possibilities.
