I always hated using Powerpoint for presentations when I was in college and I have been waiting since then for a serious alternative to it with which I could create really cool presentations, visually rich and attention grabbing.

Since Powerpoint was the only solution things have changed a little bit… ok, they have changed a lot. In the last year or two JavaScript along with HTML5 have become popular platforms for creating presentations. The jQuery plugins that are now available online are easy to use if you read their documentation and they are a piece of cake if you actually have some web design knowledge so you can stylize your slides through CSS.

impress.js

It’s a presentation tool inspired by the idea behind prezi.com and based on the power of CSS3 transforms and transitions in modern browsers.

deck.js

reveal.js is a framework for easily creating beautiful presentations using HTML. You’ll need a browser with support for CSS 3D transforms to see it in its full glory.

Fathom.js

Fathom.js

If you’re making a presentation on JavaScript, make it in Javascript. Write your slideshow in HTML, style it with CSS and control it with some jQuery-powered JavaScript. When you’re done, Fathom.js even lets you sync the video of your presentation quickly and easily.

Fathom.js comes with mouse, keyboard and scroll bar navigation built in and provides a simple API for creating your own custom interfaces.

ShowOff Presentation Software

ShowOff Presentation Software

ShowOff is a Sinatra web app that reads simple configuration files for a presentation. It is sort of like a Keynote web app engine – think S5 + Slidedown. I am using it to do all my talks in 2010, because I have a deep hatred in my heart for Keynote and yet it is by far the best in the field.

Simple Standards-based Slide Show System (S5) is Eric Meyer’s (of CSS fame) public domain (free, open source) slide show package inspired by Opera Show and others that works in all modern browsers without any plugin required because it includes its own slide show machinery in JavaScript.

Presenteer.js
